Our Doctors
Dr. Rice and his wife, Barbara, have six children, Lauren, David, Daniel, Joseph, Marianna, and Rebecca. Their pets include Emma the cat and Dusty the dog. Dr. Rice enjoys woodworking and home repairs, Class 5 kayaking, and family canoeing. Dr. Jason Bollenbeck graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. After graduation he moved to Northern Virginia to practice at Pender Veterinary Centre in Fairfax for 7 years. While at Pender, he mastered many levels of medicine and surgery. He also developed a longterm friendship with Dr. Rice. Dr. Bollenbeck and Dr. Rice purchased Towne Animal Clinic in January 2006. Dr. Bollenbeck has advanced training and extensive experience in internal medicine and surgery, dentistry, canine reproduction, abdominal and cardiac ultrasound, and oncology.
Dr Bollenbeck currently lives in Round Hill Virginia with his wife, Anne-Elizabeth, 3 dogs (Kelsey, Jack and Emmy), 3 cats (Mimi, Annie, and Tucker), and 4 horses (Dante, Brookes, Dorset and Cole). His interests include spending time with family, fishing, skiing, travel, and working on his farm. He is an active member of the Hamilton Ruritans and equine rescue. He is also the current director of the Loudon County Veterinary Medical Association and is on the board of directors for the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. In addition to her leadership roles with AAHA, Melissa was also active in SCAVMA as an executive board member, Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine as a curriculum committee member, as well as several community organizations. She has been the recipient of several awards, including 2009 VPIVBMA Student Case Competition Winner. Dr. Len Rice graduated from the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. After completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Cornell University, he moved back home to Northern Virginia to practice at Pender Veterinary Centre. He served as Chief of Medicine at Pender before purchasing Towne Animal Clinic with Dr. Bollenbeck in 2006. Dr. Rice has advanced training and extensive experience in dentistry, surgery, and cardiac and abdominal ultrasound.

Melissa Berning of Purdue University will join us in July 2011. Melissa received the Anna E. Worth AAHA Student Leadership Award for her outstanding student leadership, including service as Purdue’s AAHA Student Chapter president for two years. Ms Berning recently received her veterinary degree from Purdue, having completed her BS in biological sciences in 2007 there as well. Her professional experiences including an externship at Animal Accident and Emergency Center in Melbourne, Australia, time as a laboratory technician at Purdue’s DeWoody Laboratory, and two years as a veterinary assistant at Stoney Creek Pet Clinic in Noblesville, Ind.
